Type 2 diabetes warrants year-round awareness
Although Diabetes Awareness Month (November) is now over, the importance of raising awareness continues. Twenty-four million Americans now have the disease and those numbers are expected to explode over the next decade, thanks to our rising obesity rates. Once known as "adult onset diabetes," Type 2 diabetes is also on the rise in children.
It doesn't have to be this way. Of all the serious diseases that most commonly affect us (heart disease, cancer, etc.), diabetes is the one over which you have the MOST direct influence. This past Sunday, I did a segment on WBALTV in Baltimore, stressing that people with or at risk of Type 2 diabetes are very much in control of their destiny. Watch here: http://www.wbaltv.com/video/

Here in Ireland, they were giving free tests on the street a few weeks ago, and they took several people straight to hospital, as a result. So many have it without realising, which is scary.

I agree, as much as possible people should be aware about diabetes, how to prevent and how to avoid to have this kind of disease.

Great post. Like you, I feel it's important to not only point out the ways in which we can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes, but to also distinguish between type 1.
Although you did not specifically say such a difference exists, the mere fact that you did not just simply label the disease "diabetes" speaks volumes.
