My ND is Here!

After collecting lots of input and ideas from users, we’ve just launched a major new upgrade that will make analyzing and saving your meals and recipes a lot faster and easier!  Starting August 27th, “Pantry” will become “My ND.”

Myndmenuscreenshot_2

Don’t worry: All foods, recipes, and running totals you’ve previously saved in your Pantry have been automatically transferred to My ND. But your old Pantry is now organized into three sections. Here’s a quick tour:

My Foods:  This is where you’ll store your favorite or often-used foods and custom entries.

Myfoods_2

New! You no longer have to add foods to this list in order to add them to a recipe or your running total. Foods from the database can now be added to a recipe or running total with a single click! However, you’ll probably still find it handy to keep the foods you use most often in My Foods so that you can locate them more quickly.

My Recipes: Combine, analyze, and save any combination of individual foods and/or recipes as a recipe.

Myrecipes

New! To build a recipe, search for ingredients from My Foods, My Recipes, or the entire ND database. (When you search the entire database, we’ll still show you the results from your My Foods list first.)

My Tracking: Track and analyze your diet by adding the foods you eat to your running total. This is the feature formerly known as the Total Consumption Report. As before, you can download the report before clearing the foods and starting a new running total.

Mytracking

New! To add foods to My Tracking in a single click, search and select foods from My Foods, My Recipes, or the entire ND database. (When you search the entire database, we’ll still show you the results from your My Foods list first.)

Let us know what you think!

There are lots more new details and features built into My ND which I’m sure you’ll quickly discover and appreciate! Whether you’re a regular Pantry user or you’ve never used it, I think you’ll find the new interface easy to understand and use.

In the coming days, I’ll be highlighting more of the new features. We’re constantly looking for ways to make NutritionData better and your suggestions and feedback are invaluable—so keep them coming! You can post any comments or questions about My ND below.

This is not an improvement!! What did take less than a minute to input all the items and their amounts for a recipe to be tested for nutrients, NOW takes a VERY frustrating 5-6 minutes, then we have to make the adjustments to the volume amounts after that! This is not at all user friendly for those of us who have loved using ND daily for years. If we were just 'playing' with this, and didn't depend on it to build and test recipes for those who are ill and on sodium, phosphorus and potassium restricted diets maybe we could make do. What you call an improvement has shoved many of us right off your site.

I was quite excited about finding this site as it provides the level of detail I was looking for. That is, until I used the My Tracking feature.

MyTracking does not allow me to save my entries per day - instead I will have to download the data for each day in order to retain this information. THIS IS A MAJOR PITA!! Quite likely will determine if I even continue to use the site. I'll give it a go - but it's a show stopper in my books.

Really, this site would be the bomb if it could daily food entries with my profile and allow me to go back and forth to see what I've had from one day to another. It seems like such a basic function - I think the developers coped out on this one.

I have one other issue - but it's more wish list than a show stopper. Using the calculator to determine recommended daily values is excellent. It would be even better if the recommended values could recalculate if the target calorie intake is changed.

For example, if current recommended calories is 2500 - this is to MAINTAIN weight. To lose 1-2 pounds per week, this total must be reduced by 500-1000 calories.

What I'd like to see is if I change the calories to 1500, then the calculator adjust the nutritional components to coincide with this change. UNLESS... the nutritional components are not dependent on total calories, rather age and gender - in which case it's good as is.

Does anyone know for sure?

And the calcium values for pecans and papaya were each overstated by 5%.

Posted by: Steve | Aug 31, 2008 12:31:23 AM

That's .726 X 100 grams and .01 X 100 grams

Posted by: Steve | Aug 31, 2008 12:11:50 AM

The My Tracking module is not calculating accurate values!!!

I had 14 items in My Tracking. The analysis showed a 333% DV for calcium. That value was clearly incorrect.

I had .726 grams of Kidney Beans, all types, mature seeds, raw in the Tracker. To try and locate the source of the error, I changed the value for the beans to .01 gram. The resulting analysis now showed a DV for calcium of 308%. But the calcium content in .716 grams of those beans is only ~10%. The system subtracted 25%! Every one of the 14 items' nutrients (well, at least their calcium content) must be being summed incorrectly!

What is everyone complaining about???
This is simply the greatest website to find any and all info on foods!!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Posted by: chris | Aug 30, 2008 8:00:03 AM

Thanks for hearing us. A really simple fast-track solution would be to put checkboxes in front of every food listing, and then a button to click to send all the checked items to "My Tracking" at once.

Posted by: Monica Reinagel | Aug 29, 2008 3:13:29 PM

Brenda, Diane and others:

We hear you loud and clear. We are going to fast-track a solution that will let you add multiple foods to recipes or tracking reports at one time. Thanks for your feedback and for your patience!

Posted by: Diane | Aug 29, 2008 1:49:15 PM

I have to agree with Brenda - "Can I only add things to my tracking one at a time now instead of being able to check everything I ate for a meal at once? That is very much slower to have to do it one at a time."

It takes way to many clicks to enter my food. I measure everything in grams, and the only place I can change the amounts to the exact grams I have eaten is once I have added it to the tracking. It is too hard to do this way. I too will be looking for another way to track.

Posted by: Betty B | Aug 29, 2008 1:32:01 PM

My first time on and I couldn't come up with how many calorie I should eat in a day.

Posted by: Steve | Aug 29, 2008 10:02:19 AM

I don't know if I'm understanding this correctly, but has My Tracking taken the place of the old Pantry? If so, why bother with the separate MyFoods?

So if I have a certain 10 items for breakfast every day, I need to select them in the MyFoods section and save them to the MyTracking section? Then, every day, just zero-out the quantities in the MyTracking section and re-enter new quantities and/or additional foods - for a nutrient analysis as before?

But if I want to track yesterday's breakfast, can the information be saved to the MyRecipes section? When I click analyse and save, I get an analysis of the data, but the information isn't saved in a separate location fo future retrieval - it's saved in the MyTracking module. But when you want to analyze another meal, you need to zero-out the previous items that were being tracked!!!

cannot access my foods ort tracking

Posted by: Mary Lou | Aug 28, 2008 1:54:05 PM

Searching from either my tracking or my recipes doesn't work on Firefox. I get no results. Works fine on IE but Firefox is my preferred browser.

Posted by: Brenda | Aug 28, 2008 11:37:36 AM

The old pantry was simpler to use and more friendly. The only thing I like about MY ND is putting my food in catagories. Can we have the option of going back to the pantry?

Posted by: chris | Aug 28, 2008 8:07:41 AM

I agree with two of the latest postings--TOO many steps to add things from My Foods to My Tracking. Bring back the quantity field in front of each item in MY FOODS so we can select, for instance, ALL our breakfast items at once, AND their amounts.

Posted by: mc | Aug 28, 2008 12:11:40 AM

something is broken with adding foods to a recipe, you cant even choose how much you want to add. you can only choose the 3 or 4 presets: 100 grams, 1 cup, etc.

I can't make a recipe with 35 grams of anything??? I even tried using 0.35 of 100 grams, but that did not work.

Posted by: Joan | Aug 27, 2008 7:42:56 PM

The same negative comments as the above. 1) it is very inconvenient and adds many steps to have to go back and search for "My Foods" every time I add an item to My Tracking. Also you cannot choose the size of portion when you add it, which also adds steps.

2) it is very difficult to adjust the portions of recipes - it you have an extra portion or 1/2 portion you have to go in and change each item in the recipe. This is much less convenient than before.

I definitely prefer the old version - it was great. I do find this one user-unfriendly and wonder why you have changed it. I may look for another site.

Posted by: Nicole | Aug 27, 2008 6:05:38 PM

I like the new "My ND". However, I have one suggestion regarding the My Tracking section. When I did a search under "My Foods", then clicked the plus sign to add that food item, the search list went back to empty; I then had to click "My Foods" and "Search" again to get back to my list of foods every time I wanted to add a new food to my totals. I would request that whatever search I run, whether it my "My Foods" or "My Recipes", etc, that the tool remember that search so that after I add a food item to the list, the list of food remains. This would save unnecessary steps. Then if I wish to change my search, I can click on a different radio button and create a new search.

Hello! I've been using ND for a month and it's been a great help to me. While it'll take some time to get used to it, I like the changes you've made to the Pantry. I especially appreciate the search & categorization functions -- my pantry list was getting quite unwieldy...

Only thing that bothers me, however, is not being able to pre-select serving amounts of recipes before adding to the tracking. Since it automatically splits the ingredients up, it makes it difficult to add another serving via updating the indiv. quantities (and nearly impossible to add a half or partial serving). It seems silly to have to go back and add it once again to the tracking simply to change the serving number. Plus, it was really helpful having the serving fraction next to the recipe name in the old pantry list. I don't know if it's possible to do, but perhaps if the recipe didn't 'split up' upon first being added to My Tracking, but instead, have it show up as a single entry w/ serving selection like at the bottom of the old Pantry list. Then have it 'split up' into individual ingredients on the following result page upon clicking 'Save & Analyze.'

Thank you!

What a disaster. How in hell is something that's been made vastly more complicated supposed to be an improvement? Stupid. Time to search for an alternative website.

Posted by: angorca54 | Aug 27, 2008 3:23:36 PM

greetings,
the new ideas are interesting - in theory. maybe i am just stupid, but i seem unable to add foods to recipes, or edit/modify the ones you kindly saved from my previous custom foods.
in case it is just a bug - keep smiling. i am sure your site grows out of teething problems

Posted by: Brenda | Aug 27, 2008 2:45:51 PM

Can I only add things to my tracking one at a time now instead of being able to check everything I ate for a meal at once? That is very much slower to have to do it one at a time.

I am VERY displeased with the changes that have been made to ND. It was great before, but this new method of entering is TERRIBLE and takes forever! I want my Pantry back. If this stays this way, it is unlikely that I will continue to use ND. It simply takes too long and is unsatisfactory!

Posted by: Belle | Aug 27, 2008 1:19:20 PM

I LOVE the research that went into this site!!! It's the best of its kind. Thank you with my whole heart for all your hard work!!! Cheers and Kudos!
HOWEVER, it seems user-unfriendly. I can't use the pantry. It doesn't work. Everytime I quantify an amount, it won't keep. It takes a long time to get results.
It would be nice if each food had a marker of inflammatory or anti-inflammatory on the preliminary list of all foods so time wouldn't be wasted researching every item if one is ONLY searching for anti-inflammatory foods.
BUT, it's the BEST site I have found on the subject! :)
Thanks, Thanks, Thanks!!!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your patience as the site servers complete the transition from the old Pantry to the new My ND.

The problems some of you are experiencing are temporary. Please be assured that none of your data has been lost and everything should be working properly soon.

Hi,
I am all for change however, i can not get the new MD pantry to work. All my recipes and items show up on the home screen only and i can not transfer them to the "My ND" section. It won't let me save or edit any new recipes and the food currenting in thwe "My ND" is not even mine. Can someone advise me with what to do. I love this site and would hate to have to start over. Thanks

Posted by: Claudia Lott | Aug 27, 2008 11:42:24 AM

I guess that I don't really understand the purpose of the tracking tool. Is it used for logging your daily items and then get results of your total calories with breakdown of fats, proteins, and carbs? I tried to sample it with what I ate for breakfast, and the first time it listed all of my food items with total of all of those calories, and then I tried it again, and it pulled up list of food items that I did not even enter. It was confusing and not very useful if this tool will not give me feedback on the entries that I recorded.

Posted by: Brenda | Aug 27, 2008 11:37:59 AM

I'm sure you will get the bugs out. I love your site, but my tracking is not working. It lets me enter the foods, but when I analyse - it is not my food list.

Posted by: Bob | Aug 27, 2008 11:28:34 AM

I'm sure it's just a part of getting the new MyND up and running, but I can't seem to navigate or find my saved recipes yet.

Looking forward to the new and improved!

Posted by: Viriatha | Aug 27, 2008 10:59:18 AM

While I love this site, this change has really screwed things up. My running total isn't updating correctly and MY Foods seems to be someone else's list entirely. All the pantry is doing now is breaking :/

Posted by: Darryl | Aug 26, 2008 9:40:36 AM

I dont know what Steve is complaining about below, the website runs wonderfully, no problems whatsoever, maybe he needs to get high speed :). Anyways, recently i have decided to take my weight training/body building more seriously, meaning i need to pay attention to diet moreso then ever. I am glad to hear about the new features as the tracking capabilitys is exactly what i need to make sure i am getting the 5000-6000 calories a day that i need. Look forward to it...

Posted by: Jenifer | Aug 25, 2008 1:03:36 PM

Hi I find it really useful to get a detailed analysis per portion of my own recipe. With the running total, can we set it to total on a day by day basis?

Posted by: Roberto | Aug 25, 2008 6:45:46 AM

Very welcome change.
But please make the site faster.

Posted by: Donna | Aug 23, 2008 1:40:54 PM

I've been using the site for a while and it's great to find nutritional content for dishes I make, but having to load every ingredient into the pantry before putting the recipe together to get that information is very time consuming! Hope it will be easier now. Also I hope some additional cooking options will be added? It seems like the only options for vegetables are cooked by boiling and I personally can't remember the last time I did that! I either steam or roast them and I'm sure they retain more nutrients that way, please consider updating and adding different cooking methods.

Posted by: nancy | Aug 23, 2008 1:16:56 PM

I've been trying to find a diet tracking site that works well, but I always have to come back to nutritiondata.com to find the data to input in the other sites! So I'm pretty psyched about the news!

Posted by: jellie | Aug 23, 2008 11:10:05 AM

This is great news! Like other commenters, I find the usability of the Pantry so intolerably bad that, despite its usefulness, I just can't and won't use it. Other sites that have less data have only slightly better interfaces, so I've abandoned my nutrition tracking for far too long now. No excuse, I know, but I'm a sucker for well designed Web tools!

Hoping the overhaul makes this part of the site easier and more pleasurable to use.

Posted by: dkc | Aug 23, 2008 9:04:36 AM

This is the most informative website of it's kind out there. Sadly, also one of the most user "Unfriendly". I have had to go to other sites & software to build my recipes. I hope this new format will make this a 1 stop website for all my evaluations.

Again,It simply is the best & most complete information out there. txs.

Any chance the food label will also be made more useable?

I'm 7 weeks out from a Figure competition and I find nutritiondata.com one of my most valuable training tools. Before I would guestemate what my nutritional intake was, now I am more precise. I'm even happier that this web site will be even more user friendly to experienced as well as new users. Keep up the good work

Posted by: Paul Rogers | Aug 20, 2008 7:03:47 AM

This website is absolutely invaluable and has saved me lots of time by enabling me to analyse my meals and calorie intake easily and accurately. There are some quirks and things to get used to, but on the whole I have found the site fairly self-explanatory and user-friendly. The new changes due shortly look good and will make this site even easier to use for nutrition analysis. I just hope the site remains free to use!

Posted by: Jordan Hardy | Aug 19, 2008 5:00:14 PM

I've been using ND for a few months now, and find it intensely useful, but up until now, I haven't bothered with the pantry, mostly because it seemed too hard to use. I'm glad to know it's being overhauled.

Posted by: Steve | Aug 19, 2008 11:13:52 AM

ND is one of the most valued websites I visit, as well as the most dreaded. Currently, nutritiondata runs some sort of javascript in the background which makes navigating the site nightmarish! Every move I try to make on the website entails having to wait for something to load in the background. I wish you'd make the website more user-friendly. The bells and whistles are appreciated, but the frustratingly maddening software code the site is running is near intolerable. It's like the website is trying to track EVERY move you make. And with EVERY move, a sign is held up: "time out while we log your move"!
