Low Impact Exercise
Although I’m not a huge fan of water aerobics or working out in the pool for general fitness or weight loss I do believe it has its place.
I’ve also seen this type of low impact exercise work very effectively for those who are having trouble with their joints and are looking for an alternative to resistance training using machines, cables, or free weights. I also don’t believe exercising in the pool should be used exclusively by just triathletes, seniors, or people with aching joints.
Low impact exercise can not only give your body a day off from pounding the pavements or hitting the weights, but it can also give you a nice break in your ordinary routine. Our bodies respond positively to a “shock” to our typical programs and a day of low impact exercise, like lap swimming in the pool, can be just the ticket to working your body in a new way and stimulating it through new movement patterns.
It’s also fun! Why not try something different when your body is telling you your joints need a rest? This might just be the perfect excuse you’ve been looking for to get into the pool and enjoy the break from your routine.

That is a good point, machines like the elliptical are low impact but are not suitable for everyone.
