Tip #1 from The Healthy Eating Pyramid

Yesterday I blogged about The Healthy Eating Pyramid from the Harvard School of Public Health. They had a quick list of ways that you can make healthy eating choices. If you took a look at the pyramidRunning2_2 you would have seen that exercise and weight control are at the base.

Why is exercise and weight control the foundation of The Healthy Eating Pyramid when in the past the USDA had grains at the base and now, even in MYPyramid, exercise is just a small component?

Well, according to The Healthy Eating Pyramid exercise and weight control is what you need to stay healthy. They also say that it influences the food choices you make - and this I believe is so true. When you exercise regularly your body craves healthy good for you food - not processed junk food.

So in the end this all works because weight change = calories in - calories out.
if you burn less than you consume you will gain weight
if you burn as much as you consume your weight will remain the same
if you burn more than you consume you will lose weight

Check out Steve's blog for some great exercise tips. Tomorrow I will give you more information on how to make The Healthy Eating Pyramid work for you.
