Exotic Fruit - Part 1

Cherimooya As you walk down the produce aisle in the market you may just keep passing by the exotic fruits because you have no idea what they are or what to do with them. Over the next few day I will share information with you about wide variety of exotic fruits so you can add some new high fiber, nutrient rich foods to your diet!

We'll start here...

Cherimoya or Custard Apple (which is one of my favorite fruits!) is heart shaped and has a green skin that looks like shingles. When ripe it will be soft to the touch. Cut open the fruit and you will see a white flesh inside and big black seeds - eat the white and discard the seeds. It tastes like pineapple and banana - it's delicious!!

Cactus Pear or Prickly Pear is oblong and may be purple, red or green. There will be small thorns on the surface and it is ripe when soft to the touch. Cut open the pear and the inside is bright magenta with black seeds. You can eat the flesh and seeds - discard the skin. You can cut slices of the pear and add to salads. This fruit can stain so be careful of where and when you are eating it.

Carambola or Star Fruit when cut into slices looks like a star with 5 points. They could be sweet or sour and have a crisp texture. The star fruit does not need to be peeled or seeded and can be eaten alone or makes a great addition to a salad.

During the week I will share more exotic fruits with you.

What is your favorite exotic fruit?

ST - http://www.foodsubs.com/FGFruit.html has pictures of all the fruits I mentioned to help you better visualize them.

As for the goods of consuming fruit...all fruits have vitamins, minerals and fiber that our bodies need for good health and to help prevent chronic disease. Fruit is also a natural source of energy and substituting fruits for higher calories food items can help with weight loss.

And for the bads...I can't think of any unless you are not eating enough servings of fruit each day.

Dana,
would you have pictures of each of the exotic fruit that you've mentioned for easy identification and visualization of them?
If you can also share the goods and the bads of consuming these fruits, it would be great
