Children, Fast Food, and Obesity

A recent study put out by the Center for Science in the Public Interest exposed the high caloric and fat content on fast food children's menus. The study showed that the majority of these meals were too high in calories, fat, saturated fat and trains-fats.

CPSI's nutrition policy director Margo G. Wootan said, “People may not get a heart attack until their 50s or 60s, but arteries begin to clog in childhood. Most of these kids’ meals appear to be designed to put America’s children on the fast-track to obesity, disability, heart attack, or diabetes.”

It's hard when children have schedules as busy as adults and fast food is an easy way to get in a meal, but the results of this study show that these meals are more than just not healthy. What can you do to help kids eat better...

Well, I hate to admit it, but with school starting again pretty soon one way to make sure kids eat healthy is by sending them to school with a nutritionally packed lunch. Here are some tips:

How do you keep your kids eating healthy in this fast-food world?

Thanks for the information on obesity. Those links for healthy food for kids at the bottom of the page was really helpful!

Thanks for the information on .

We recently wrote an article (http://brainblogger.com/2008/07/26/why-your-city-planner-is-making-you-fat/) on obesity trends at Brain Blogger (http://brainblogger.com/). Did you know that two-thirds of America is overweight? We can always blame ourselves for this sort of thing, but could it be more? Could the destruction of neighborhoods for retail stores play a part?

We would like to read your comments on our article. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Kelly

Unfortunately, in our world today, fast- food restaurants have become part of the school environment, so much so, that many kids depend on the restaurants located within close proximity to their schools for their daily lunches, fast- food is no longer a treat at the end of the week; it's part of a staple diet.

Parents can try and teach their children healthy eating habits but restaurants like McDonald's have purposely situated their establishments near schools as a means for attracting their most important clientele, children.

If we hope to reverse the adverse affects of fast- food we must start with our kids and stopping fast-food restaurants from siting their restaurants near schools. Kids will be forced to pack healthy lunches.
