Are there "Good or Bad" foods?
I can't tell you how many times a client will label a food as "good or bad". In general I don't like to label food in this way as it gives way to a diet mentality that perpetuates long term dieting efforts. My long lasting motto yells, moderation with all things! The idea is to neutralize foods. Don’t label them good or bad. When you make something "bad" it becomes a forbidden food. What happens when you forbid someone to eat it? You will want it even more!
But what if you struggle with certain foods? You don't want to deny yourself but you don't want to get carried away consuming too much of it either, particularly if you are still trying to lose a few pounds. So make it safe. Either buy one single serving of it or package it in single serving sizes if that can work for you.
One of my favorite foods is ice cream. But I don’t dare bring a carton of it home because I will literally eat it out of the carton. (I really would!) So, if I want ice cream I go to an ice cream store and have one. I sit down and I savor every single creamy lick! And I feel totally satisfied having it that way. Another one of my favorite foods is popcorn. Thank goodness for the single serving bags!
If you really cannot handle your favorite food in those ways just yet, then don't. I would encourage you to try it once in awhile and learn to develop the skill. It really can be learned with practice.
Readers, how do you handle eating your favorite foods while trying to lose weight?

Hi Karina, first of all good work at keeping a check on your cholesterol. Check this past week for blogs on "Diet" foods don't have to be boring, part 2 and 3. They offer numerous suggestions on lowering fat in general, which will help. Also remember anything from an animal source (this includes cheese and butter too of course) will have some cholesterol but red meat in particular has the most, fish and poultry do not contain as much. Generally the fattier the meat, the more cholesterol it contains. Next week I'll do a few blogs on cholesterol so keep reading!
