An Organic Grocery List

People often ask me what food items they should buy organic. I usually tell them if they can afford it to buy all organic, but with grocery prices rising it can be difficult thing to do. With costs rising here are some tips to help you make your organic grocery list...

Fruits and Vegetables:
The Environmental Working Group created a list of the "dirty dozen" which are the fruits and vegetables that are the most contaminated so always buy these items organic:
apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, imported grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, red raspberries, spinach and strawberries.
Remember to buy locally and in season to save money.

Meat, Poultry, and Dairy:
Organic meat, poultry and dairy has less hormones and antibiotics and is less likely to be contaminated with toxins from non-organic feed.
Although organic meat and poultry is more expensive if you stick to small serving sizes (and add more vegetables and whole grain to your diet) you can have healthy protein and save some money.
Don't forget to consider adding beans to your diet as a protein alternative to meat and poultry which will also help your shopping budget.
Look for coupons for organic dairy products and you can now find organic dairy in your local supermarket which will cost less than going to smaller health food stores.

Consider becoming part of a Food Co-op or a CSA to get fresh organic produce and dairy products.
Farmers markets are also another way to find local and seasonal groceries.
Some of the big shops (Cost-Co, Bj's, Sam's Club) are carrying organic groceries so stock up on staples and save.

Rachel - thanks so much for your suggestions on other ways to purchase organic products in bulk.

Buying grains, bean, nuts, and dried fruit from the bins at the health food store is such a great way to get healthy products for great prices!

Another option similar to the Sam's Club/Costco model is to buy organic staples in bulk either from the gravity feeds at your local health food store (avoid the non-gravity feed bins that people can stick their hands into - ick. germs.) or look into buying these bulk foods online. I've found the cost savings make it worth it, even with shipping costs. www.shoporganic.com has good prices on staples like rice and beans when you buy them in bulk and a lot of unique organic foods.

I think the expense is worth it - this isn't just about the health of our bodies its about the health of the planet as a whole.
