"Paper Weight"
For years the food diary has been touted as a tool for weight loss. I've always seen the value of it knowing how successful my clients are when using this tool compared to the ones that don't utilize this basic and effective strategy. I still use it from time to time myself, especially if the scale indicates I am up and I don’t know why!
It started way back in the 80's when behavior modification was more the "in" thing for weight loss. Well, here we are in 2008 and dieters (not just researchers) are saying it really does work!
An article called "Paper Weight" by Sally Squires has the proof. "A new study suggests that a piece of paper – and the willingness to record your eating habits – could be what stands between you and a healthier weight."
So why does it work? It has a lot to do with accountability. You see exactly what you eat right there in black and white (you do have to be honest and know your serving sizes of course). Accountability is challenging to establish for just yourself and this is one good way of doing just that. And if you are really diligent the food diary can also help you see what people, situations, and feelings sabotage your efforts.
