Menopause and Weight Gain - 3

J0430869 The last few days I have been reviewing menopause and weight gain. I frequently mention the importance of avoiding excess sugar, refined white carbs, and caffeine for a healthy diet but in menopause these can also disrupt hormones which may contribute to more weight gain and the "men-o-pot" that frequently appears. Factor in not getting enough sleep and high stress.  We now have an even more intense association with blood sugar and weight management in menopause.

The problem is how the above factors deplete the adrenal glands which take over hormone production in menopause. Your adrenal glands are supposed to produce hormones after the ovaries shut down. If the adrenal glands are "worn out" from all the abuses mentioned, they are incapable of making the needed hormones for proper balance.

Our bodies work as a whole system. There is a strong interconnection between the sex hormones, the adrenal glands (stress hormones) and blood sugar regulation hormones (insulin) that can be highly disrupted by the way we live. And of course this isn’t just applicable in menopause, it relates to general good health as well.

So if you haven't been taking care of yourself it's never too late to begin!

How about it ladies? Who are your favorite holistic health care providers in this area? Dr. Northrup is a favorite of mine too. Dr. Susan Lark thinks similarly.

I've really enjoyed reading these blog posts specifically about menopause and now have new word -- "menopot" -- to add to my vocabulary! I'm commenting on this post, specifically, because all the reading about menopause I've done has pointed to a whole body effort to balance hormones, reduce meno symptoms, and ward off weight gain. I'm glad to see this being stressed here. In addition to info here, I've found Dr. Northup's books about menopause and the womentowomen.com site (part of a clinic Dr. Northrup helped found) to be the best places to go for a holistic approach to menopause. If you have any other preferred books/web sites, please post them! Thanks!
