Other Health Hazards Found in Foods - 1
In previous blogs I've discussed various additives that may interfere with weight loss. Today and tomorrow I'd like to cover other additives that may pose threats to our health in some way. After all, how can we really enjoy all the great weight loss benefits if we aren’t healthy? The following have been linked to cancer in animal studies:
- BHA and BHT: These two are not really discussed too much. Butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydrozyttoluene are used to preserve specific foods like cereals, chewing gum, potato chips, and vegetable oils. They are considered oxidants, which form potentially cancer-causing reactive compounds in your body.
- Propyl Gallate: This is another preservative, often used in conjunction with BHA and BHT. It is sometimes found in meat products, chicken soup base, and chewing gum.
- Acesulfame-K: This is another artificial sweetener found in baked goods, chewing gum, and gelatin desserts. Actually there has not been much study on this, but the ones done indicate it may cause cancer in rats.
There is more tomorrow.

On the same topic, I just recently heard of the Cancer and Nutrition symposium in DC this summer. It sounds like the speakers will be presenting information on certain foods that fight cancer. Has anyone heard about this event? www.cancerproject.org/symposium
