Dieting on a Budget and Saving our Environment

J0422366 Last week Dana made a few suggestions on Eating Right on a Budget and Monica has mentioned previously how we can save our environment, be healthy, and save on food costs by eating differently. Since food and gas costs are now a harsh reality and we are going "green" more, I'm expanding on everyone's original thoughts on the matter.

  • I always suggest to my clients to both plan and shop at least once a week. This not only ensures having healthier food choices around but it also saves money because the less exposure time you actually have in a store the less you spend. (And it saves gas and time!)
  • When you are planning meals for the week read the ads before you decide on a menu. Include that vegetarian meal at least once a week. (Since beans and lentils frequently cook up so much in volume you can probably make it into two days worth of meals. This means even more savings on food costs!)
  • Plan on dinners with simple ingredients rather than paying a lot of money for special high cost ingredients. Barbeque sauce, for example is really simple to make but can cost more in the store and usually contains some of the unhealthier ingredients as well.

I realize many of these options will take more of your time. Figure out which ones are worth making the changes for. Maybe consider delegating some of these ideas to family members when you can. Remember all this is a matter of priorities. Isn't your health and your environment more important?

Lots more on this topic later this week.
