Why do you choose your food?
I was having lunch with a friend the other day and she was telling me about what she had for dinner the night before. She had eggs with arugula and turmeric - because of it's anti-inflammatory properties. She also told me about the beer she had over the weekend, and that it was a dark beer, because it's higher in antioxidants. As we were eating our lunch she spoke of the hummus she was presently eating. She buys it because it has no preservatives in it. I finally asked her if she ever ate anything without thinking about the food's nutritional benefits or what was in it. Her response was no, unless it's chocolate cake.
This conversation got me thinking as to why I make certain food choices...
I eat fruit because I love it. I usually don't think about the health benefits, but I know it curbs my sweet tooth and it helps me feel full.
I consume a good amount of vegetables and I make sure my salads have lots vegetables - every color of the rainbow is accounted for - and this lets me know I know I am getting a wide variety of vitamins.
I don't use salad dressing, too much artificial stuff in them, so I use avocado to get some healthy fats.
When I eat cereals, or breads, I always go whole grain. I only eat grains that have 3 grams or more of fiber per serving to help me feel full after eating so I can keep my weight in check.
I do on occasion eat candy (jelly beans) because I like it. I know there is no nutritional benefit and there may be artificial things in it, but I also eat for enjoyment as well as the health benefits.
My list can go on and on, but I'd like to know why you choose the foods you do...
