Keep Your Metabolism Going

Metabolism Keeping your metabolism going will help you with your weight loss. What you might be wondering is how can you actually do this. Here are some important tips, along with a great video from Joy Bauer, MD, RD, to help you keep your metabolism going:

  • Exercise - cardio is great, but strength training will increase muscle mass which gives your metabolism an extra boost - take a look at what Steve has to say about exercise.
  • Don't eat too few calories - starving yourself actually slows down your metabolism - you need to fuel the fire.
  • Eat every few hours - having small meals throughout the day will keep your metabolism going. Make sure they are portioned out so you don't over eat.
  • Consume lean protein - at each meal have lean protein - white meat turkey or chicken, fish, soy and low-fat dairy products are your best bets.

You should also be keeping a food diary as you are working on weight loss. This will help keep you accountable of what you are eating. Keep coming back to the ND blog so you can continue working towards your healthy weight.

Is eating all through the day,to keep your metabolism going good for heart patients? My husband has had 3 heart attacks. Someone told him to do this, but I am concerned it is not good for him.

Eat at least 1000 calories per day?

Depending on the size of a person, 1000 calories a day is early anorexia. then again, if a person is very small, that might be okay. I think this needs a little more personalization.

Steve - thank you for sharing this information. These articles show that eating 3 or 6 meals a day shows the same benefits - its calorie reduction that creates weight loss which is why I stressed portion sized meals.

When working on weight loss you have to find what works best for the individual. I have found with my clients, and personally, that eating smaller meals and snacks prevents overeating and results in long term weight loss.

Contrary to the idiosyncratic experience of individuals, there is good evidence that, in general, eating six instead of three meals daily has no benefit in the setting of a weight loss diet.

The latter two studies are from 1971 and 1981! There is a very recent scientific journal article on the subject that supports my contention, but I can't find it right now.

Those are some great tips! Eat lean, exercise, and the 'grazing' method of eating every few hours, proper portions. I like the 'fire' picture. After all, our metabolism is the 'fire' that is fueled by our food consumption and breakdown of other energy sources. Fire it up!
