Hypnosis for Weight Loss
Recently a client asked me if hypnosis could work for weight loss. It used to be that hypnosis was considered a bogus type of practice associated with making people do weird things like clucking like a chicken at the county fair. But according to the International Journal of Obesity, hypnotherapy could actually aid in weight loss.
For successful results do keep a few things in mind:
- The idea with hypnosis for weight loss is to modify a specific behavior but you have to be really willing to choose to make this change, whether it be related to your actual food choices, portions, or binging.
- You also want to change the behavior by finding the root cause. In other words if you are an emotional eater it's important to get at the real crux of why you eat for emotional reasons.
- You will also need to have a minimum of 6-8 sessions with a trained hypnotherapist. Then it might be recommended that you have your own personalized CD to listen to or special exercises to do daily. (This is not a quick fix weight loss option.) A CD is usually 30 minutes or longer so you must be willing to devote at least that amount of time each day for optimum results.
- Make sure you get a state qualified hypnotherapist, preferably one that has been referred to you by a friend or doctor.
You are now getting sleepy, you are relaxed, you are satisfied eating less, you exercise regularly..........

I really value your points. Hypnosis helped me a lot to reduce my weight and the complex. It gave confidence in me and increased my self esteem. I got mine from Andrew Johnson’s site and I see he now does a free Relaxation download. It gave confidence in me.

As a hypnotherapist for over 25 years I fully understand the association of hypnosis with weirdness. It's an ongoing need to dispense many misconceptions. Many of them are the result of "hypnotists" who are more concerned with making a buck or putting on a show than promoting sound science. Thanks.

Hi Mike,
Thank you for sharing your additional insights on hypnotherapy. People need to know what to expect before they decide on something like this.

As a hypnotherapist myself I agree with what you say here. Hypnosis isn't magic; if anyone claims they can cause you to lose weight without changing your behavior, they are either a charlatan or, at best, woefully ignorant about the laws of physics.
What hypnotherapy does is align your habitual thoughts, feelings and desires with your goal to lose weight (or exercise, or stop smoking or whatever). Once all the parts of your mind are working together, your behavior will naturally shift.
A good hypnotherapist will also support you by directing you to good sources of information (I send my clients to nutritiondata.com) so that you know how to eat healthily and positively for energy and nutrition, as well as wanting to do so.
I'm currently using hypnotherapy (and nutritiondata.com) for my own goal of gaining weight healthily, which has more in common with losing weight healthily than you might think. I'm blogging about it at: http://hypno.co.nz/blogs/index.php/tag/nutrition/
