Do you Want to Lose Weight?
Do you want to lose weight? Are you specific about exactly why you want to lose weight? If you haven’t explored, in depth, how weight loss will affect the quality of your life you will never remain motivated enough to get to your goals. These have to be the things that will make your life your very own and will give you the depth of happiness that you truly want in life. They will give you a sense of real accomplishment and the health benefits will contribute to a much greater quality of life.
Comprise a list of five to ten solid reasons reasons why you genuinely want to lose your weight. Obviously you have to work on your goals but another aspect to this also means that you have to be willingly, pleasantly, and with true acceptance in your heart, say "no" to all the other fluff in your life that really doesn’t matter. This ultimately means having a much bigger and better "yes" burning in your core to those things that you do want.
It's a matter of making your list so compelling that saying "no" to those things is easy to do.

Hi Jina, you are not disturbing me at all here. I too have been overweight in the past and know firsthand the frustration you must be feeling. Go to: http://blog.nutritiondata.com/dieting_weight_loss_blog/2008/01/how-many-calori.html to learn how to determine your calorie range. Monica can walk you right through it on this post. But, from the way you describe something when you eat something, it sounds like you have food sensitivities. I will write about these late next week in my blogs so watch for it. You should also ask your doctor to do an Elisa test and test for reactions to foods. That's what it sounds like to me. You can also try an "elimination test": http://www.drcranton.com/elimination_diet.htm . It's a hard thing to do but you will find the foods you should not be eating and which are probably contributing to your lack of weight loss. A qualified RD or professional nutritionist in your area can also help you with this. Hope this gives you some direction. -Elaine

I'm sorry Elaine if I'm disturbing you with all these comments. How can I check those calories? I don't know what to click on if its somewhere on this page. Yes I'm in a good health not much problems I only have a problem when I eat or drink anything even one spoon I get so bloated and look abou 5 months pregnant when I don't eat all day my stomach is sticking to my back. Doctor decided to put in a scope and see what's going on because medicines didn't help. So I'm just waiting for next month for that appoitment. Thank you so much Elaine really your helping a lot of us that by giving us and sharing your knowledge I really appreciate it.

Hi Jina,
Have you checked how many calories you need to lose weight? If you are either eating too much OR too little you may not lose weight. Many people respond to a 50% carb, 30% protein and 20% fat plan, or you may have to play with the ratios to determine what food balance you need. Have you had a good physical recently? Sometimes thyroid or blood sugar can interfere with weight loss. Read this blog for more insights on thyroid: http://blog.nutritiondata.com/dieting_weight_loss_blog/2008/03/tired-all-the-t.html or http://www.typepad.com/t/app/weblog/post?__mode=edit_entry&id=53392584&blog_id=1409399 Hope this helps!

I did go through them before I posted my comment but I didn't notice any response that matches my issue.I am too young it should be easy to deal with my case I mean I do a lot of work beside working out and dancing. I'm on my feet 40 hrs a week. But the number just won't go below 160.

Hi Jina, go through all the responses on this blog, especially mine. Somewhere in there is the answer. Elaine

I'll be 19 this month. I weigh 160lbs. Before 4 yrs I missed my cycle for 4 months so the doctor prescribed birth control patches after taking them I didn't realize at first the weight I was gaining. But when I realized I was already 157 I didn't take those patches every single week but I took them for a while. Then I went back it was different doctor and she told that those patches were too high dose for me she gave me pills instead. I didn't take them and never will take any birth control medication again. What can I do now I been belly dancing 1 hour everyday and working out at gym 1 hour 3x a week but its not going below 160! What can I do I feel terrible I hate going out or taking pictures its giving me hard times.

Hi Ev, don't give up! First have your doctor check your medication. It may be possible he has you on a too high of a dose of medication. The thyroid regulates metabolism of how you burn calories and he may have accidentally slowed it down too much. Then get back to basics - check ND's weight loss home page, determine your calories and keep a diary. Many times people simply are consuming too many calories without realizing it. Let us know how you do!

I can't seem to lose weight. I started walking and was up to a mile, but then during January I saw Christmas pics that had no noticeable change whatsoever in my weight. I was still a plump pumpkin. I'm 48, and have hyperthyroidism I have to take Tapazole for. I just can't seem to shake the weight. I stopped the walking in despair, and now my clothes are getting tighter again. Oh me!

Hello. I weigh 130 pounds and I'd like to weigh about 110ish? But I can't seem to lose the weight. Whenever I diet I end up giving in to my temptations, I just can't stick with it. I stop exercising. And begin to eat whatever I like again. How can I get myself to stay on a diet?

Hi Marie,
To determine your metabolic type, which would give you an idea of what balance you might want in order to lose weight, read the book, "The Metabolic Typing Diet" by William Wilcott. It will give you the direction you need. Use ND's Pantry to get your Daily Total Consumption report as it breaks your food plan into fats, carbs, and protein. according to how you eat.

Over the past 5 years, I've gained approx 100 lbs. I'm really trying to lose weight now and I'm aware of my daily caloric needs, but how can I figure out what % of protien, carbs and fat my body needs to burn fat along with my exercise plan?
I've looked at the carb intake calculators online, but they are not specific in losing weight, only in maintaing your current weight.
Thank you for any help!

Hi Sacdiyo,
You are certainly on target with all that advice. And, you still need to figure out how many calories that you as an individual person actually requires, so you can figure out what makes up a "moderate calorie and fat intake" is! Again, I suggest using ND's free Daily Needs calculator to find this information out.
Posted by: sacdiyo | Apr 22, 2008 2:20:49 PM
hi sacdiyo
The most effective way to lose weight and to permanently maintain weight loss over time is to moderate calorie and fat intake, follow a healthy balanced diet and stay active. Weight loss strategies should encourage setting realistic goals and making permanent changes in eating habits.

I also have lost weight and gained most of it back and I don't know how to get it off. I lost over 70 lbs and I gained about 40-50 back. I have no idea what to do. I don't know where to start and I feel like I have no hope. Please help if you can.

Hi Marilyn,
There are numerous people like you that have blood sugar imbalances. No matter how healthy any juice may be, it still can be pretty refined and simply just too much sugar, natural or not. I am so glad you got it figured it out!
Posted by: Marilyn | Apr 1, 2008 5:22:07 PM
I have figured out my extreme hunger problem, and it is sugar-related. Most of my family has low blood sugar problems, but it has only ever been a mild annoyance for me. After Christmas I added pomegranate juice and more exotic dried fruits to my morning ritual and it created havoc with my system. The hunger pains were terrible. Have now gotten it under control and am able to cut the calories back to lose, slowly.

Hi Fatima,
When you have been on a crash diet (or any kind of weight loss program for that matter) you need to very gradually add food back in. Use ND's free Daily Needs Calculator to figure out how many calories you need to maintain or lose, and work up to that amount very, very, slowly, maybe about 50-100 calories every week or so. Let me know how that goes.

Thank you for the suggestions. I'll get on them right away. In past years I've been able to lose the Christmas weight because of a little less food and tons more exercise, but now that I have this slight knee problem, it's not working. I suspect there's some underlying issue but didn't know what it might be. Most of the time people don't take me seriously because I don't look overweight. But when you eat nearly as much as your 5' 10" spouse, you KNOW something is wacky. Will let you know.
Posted by: Elaine Murphy | Mar 24, 2008 2:43:58 PM
Hi Marilyn,
I would start by looking up exactly how many calories you need to lose weight in ND's Daily Needs Calculator (it's free). Then track your calories accurately in ND's Pantry. Start with these two things and if you still don't lose weight get your basal metabolic rate checked to see if that might be the issue. Let us know how you do.
Posted by: Marilyn | Mar 24, 2008 2:27:42 PM
I at am a healthy weight and size for my age (48), but have never been able to lose weight easily. This year my "Christmas 5" absolutely will not come off. I exercise 4-5 times weekly, but cannot increase time nor intensity because of my knee. I cannot eat much less because I get weak with hunger, and this year was even in pain from hunger pangs. My self control is not the issue here - it's my body's inability to accept less food. I eat a good balanced diet with whole grains - I just can't reduce my intake in order to lose. Any ideas on my problem?

Hi Brenda,
It's great that you have not given up! Water is extremely important for weight loss so keep up the great work on that too! Go for over all balance with meals. Complex carbohydrates in moderation and balanced properly, are fine at any meal.
Posted by: Brenda | Mar 24, 2008 10:44:01 AM
I too have regain 10 pounds after losing 30. I have found that if I don't drink enough water at least 80oz a day, then I retain it and that adds water weight. I also eat my carbs in the morning so I have the day to burn them off. I am slowly relosing the 10 pounds.
Posted by: Elaine | Mar 18, 2008 5:12:55 PM
Hi Nonna,
You are on the right track by starting to keep a food diary. Be honest with everything you put in your month, including the amounts, so it is accurate. You might also want to use the Daily Needs Calculator on this web site to actually determine how many calories you have to consume to lose weight. I didn't notice much protein in your diet either. You need a good balance of all the food groups to lose weight. Let me know how you do.
Posted by: Nonna | Mar 12, 2008 11:03:54 AM
Here is my issue. I work out almost every day and I keep putting on weight. I have put on 10 pounds every year and I can't take it off. I know I eat too much but the scale does not move and I get frustrated so I binge eat. During the day I eat very well, i.e. breakfast, skim milk, salad with olive oil at lunch, lots of fruits and vegetables but my head is getting got and stay motivated. When I look at the blogs people have at least lost weight and then put it back on I have never managed even managed to loose a pound. Today I started documenting what I am eating and counting calories. Any suggestions…thanks

Hi Rachel,
Good for you that you were able to get back on track when you did. That's probably the most challenging thing to accomplish after a slip. You give others strength to keep going. Another important thing for both of you ladies is NOT TO EVER GIVE UP! Eventually you will make it as long as you don't lose sight of all the important reasons why you want to lose weight in the first place. (See blog above.) Stay the course!
Posted by: Rachel | Mar 10, 2008 1:44:31 PM
I started off at 104kg about 6months ago, in 2 months I managed to drop down to 88kg - I felt great! Then I went on holiday and then it was Christmas, then another holiday... I'm back at 94kg now. I am going to loose it though, definitely getting back on the wagon!
Posted by: Elaine | Mar 9, 2008 10:18:09 PM
Hi Linda,
The first thing you need to do is really forgive yourself for the slip up at Christmas and the regained 15 pounds. Until you forgive yourself you'll never get back on track. You can't change what already happened but you can change what you do from this moment on. Start believing you CAN lose weight this time and you will! Learn from your mistakes and move on. Readers let's give Linda our support. What do you all do when you slip up? How do you get back on track?
Posted by: Linda | Mar 9, 2008 9:29:23 PM
I started a diet (with the help of a doctor) last May. I was successful right up until December having lost a total of 55 pounds. Again, the way I always do, I fell off the wagon. It started with the dreaded Christmas cookies and then all bets were off. I soon stopped working out and have put 15 pounds back on. I can't seem to get motivated again. What can I do????
