Happy St. Patrick's Day!

J0341757 The last few days I've been reviewing the downside of drinking too much alcohol on St. Patrick's Day, but I hate bearing bad news all the time. So now I have some good news for you.

You might be celebrating by eating the traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner. Even though the corned beef is rather a fatty cut of meat at least the cabbage is particularly good for you if you plan on a little drinking later in the evening.

For years it has been known that the cruciferous vegetables are especially healthy foods. Now new research is saying that cabbage and the phytonutrients found in these vegetables work on a much "deeper level in the body. These special compounds actually signal our genes to increase production of enzymes involved in the detoxification, the cleansing process through which our bodies eliminate harmful compounds."(Then there are those that swear by the cabbage soup diet for weight loss as well. It does make you wonder.) So maybe if we are lucky this St. Patrick's Day the cabbage will protect us a little if we drink too much.  (I still maintain that moderation is the best way to go.)

Happy St. Patrick's Day and don’t forget to wear your green today!
