Oatmeal for Weight Loss

J0409011 Recently in response to my blog on eating breakfast for weight control, a doctor suggested old fashioned oatmeal and fruit. This particular breakfast gets your metabolism started for the day, prevents you from over eating later in the evening and even contributes to your weight loss efforts. Oatmeal probably works primarily because of the satiety level (check out ND's Fullness Factor for a reference) and high fiber content.

Studies confirm oatmeal with weight loss: "A recent study conducted by the Rippe Lifestyle Institute has found that in addition to lowering cholesterol, eating oatmeal can also be part of a healthy weight loss plan." Just make sure your oatmeal isn’t the highly refined instant variety oatmeal. Check the label for high fiber content (at least three grams of fiber per 100 calories) to insure you are getting all of its' health benefits. You lose out if you pick out the instant oatmeal that has been too refined and/or if it contains too much added sugar.

Hi Tina,
Reread the blogs above for your answer, especially my response to David's. I think most people need just a little protein at breakfast. And some people do need more than just oatmeal with their breakfast. If you are trying to lose weight you have to consider total calories. -Elaine

i have started to eat oatmeal with 1/4 cup of walnuts and 1/4 cup of cranraisens, no milk or sugar. only the cranraisens. so, my question is this an ok way to eat the oatmeal and still come out healthy?? thank you.

I totally agree with the oatmeal comment. My husband and I are eating steel cut oats for Breakfast daily and it helps in blood sugar levels and has controlled our weight and infact we are seeing a gradual weight loss. I think the key to all this is regularity and discipline in eating small portion sizes, and exercising and relaxation.

Hi Isabel, either is fine but consider these few things: If you choose a smoothie use the whole fruit rather than fruit juices. Make sure you add a small amount of protein with the meal as well.
(See my previous response above as to why.) Oatmeal is also very good as long as it is not the "instant" in a packet. The packets frequently are so refined they have little nutrient value and are low in fiber.

I have 7 pounds more than usually.Which guide do you suggest to me?I use to make a smoothie for breakfast but i feel i need for an oatmeal,it is ok?
I do excercise every other day and everyday swiming.ihave 38 and 6 feet

Hi David,
I frequently suggest some kind of protein at breakfast, even with oatmeal to help with blood sugar issues especially. Watch out for consuming too much protein though as many shakes are high in protein. For larger men usually 14 to 21 grams at breakfast is plenty. The idea is balance.
