Nordic Walking takes it to the Streets

NordicwalkingforweightlossHave you ever seen anyone walking down the street holding two long poles that resemble those you would use in skiing?

If you've ever wondered what they were doing it is an activity that has been going on for decades called Nordic Walking. "Ski Walking" and hill bounding with poles began as an off season routine for Nordic skiers as a way to exercise all year long.

Today it has been adapted for any climate and environmental conditions. The poles come with different tips depending on the surface you will be walking on and have comfortable grips and gloves to secure them in your hands.

By using the poles you are reducing the stress on your knees and lower body while forcing your core and upper body muscles to exert more force. The result can lead to additional calories burned and a helpful aid for those who would love to do more exercise, but are bothered by lowered body ailments.

I grew up Nordic skiing to cross-train for cycling. Just recently in the Fall before it snows a friend and I started Nordic walking with poles on the local trails. We would go up hill and it would be almost like doing lunges the entire time, it’s one the best workouts you can do for fitness and weight loss.

Research from the Cooper Institute found that Nordic walking increased calorie expenditure by 20% over normal walking at the same speed, because it also works the core and upper body muscles.

If you're already a 'walker' it seems like a great (and easy) idea to just add a pair of poles to your routine.

Enjoy!

Nordic Walking is HUGE in Europe - over 6 million folks walking with poles in the cities, in the country and up in the mountains.

Not only do you burn more calories when you walk with poles you radically reduce the stress to your shins, knees, hips and back. Even folks with balance issues can benefit from one-piece durable walking poles - including folks with MS, Parkinson’s, Neuropathy, Stroke Recovery and Polio Survivors.

Walking with poles is great for runners with shin splints and/or runners knee too!

Just recently started Nordic walking, and I'm loving it! It's a great full body work out, I can sincerely recommend it to anyone.

It's gentle on the joints, and I feel that it's strengthened my back muscles and improved my posture too. And the fact that you only need to buy the poles, and after that it's free, makes it a very cost effective way of keeping fit.
