That additional stimulus would certainly aid in your weight loss goals and definitely speed up the process. The question is, should we alter the chemical response that tells our bodies to stop exercising at a certain point? Do you really want to delay that mechanism?

It was previously thought that a build-up in lactic acid inside the muscles was the source of muscle exhaustion. However, yesterday the New York Times outlined new evidence by Dr. Marks published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences proves otherwise.

His research has shown that it is actually leaked calcium that begins to weaken muscle contractions. Although most of the studies being done on a new drug that will block calcium leakage have been conducted with a focus on congestive heart failure, they have demonstrated interesting findings in terms of aerobic endurance in mice.  It was found that the mice that were injected with the experimental drug were able to run 10 – 20% longer compared to their previous bests.

Are we looking at the next athletic enhancer or merely a beneficial drug for heart disease? Would you take it if it was available to you?

Hi Lloyd,

You may be right. The same drug that may one day help heart attack patients may actually be harmful to others if they push themselves beyond their current capacity...

I suppose it depends on your view of why muscles fatigue and respond by building up certain chemicals.

If it is a safety mechanism , then being able to block it may put it in the " do the risks outweight the benefits" catagory for the average person. I can see alot of stress on the heart in such a scenerio.

Athletes will take it no matter what the risks.
