Fiber and Weight Loss

J0411667 To put it nicely, when we think of fiber we think of balancing out irregularity. It actually does a whole lot more, although I am sure you are more interested in it as how it relates to helping you lose weight, right?

When foods are in their natural whole state (unprocessed) they contain more of their natural fiber content. It is this fiber that helps make you feel more satisfied with your meals.

When you consume a grilled chicken breast, a cup of green beans topped with almonds, a small bowl of (homemade) vegetable soup and a cup of brown rice this meal literally contains generous amounts of fiber from everything except the chicken breast. On the other extreme, if you eat a meal from a fast food restaurant which contains a grilled chicken breast on a white bun, French fries and a soda there is very little fiber from it because it is so processed and void of many nutrients.

You may feel satisfied for awhile but not as long as you would from the first meal. You might also have to deal with low blood sugar later, which translates into low energy, hunger/cravings, and probably a less stable mood. Why? One reason has to do with the high amount of simple carbohydrates and lack of fiber. The fiber in food can act as a "buffer" as to how quickly or slowly the carbohydrates act in your body. The fiber also helps you feel more satiated with overall food intake.

So if you want to be satisfied with less food, give yourself a meal with high fiber and more nutrients. You'll not only lose weight but you'll be healthier.

Hi Ramsey,

There are many great high fiber foods out there. I'll have to try one of those. Check out my blog on Tuesday for additional information on fiber.
