Should there be a "Twinkie Tax?"

J0410052 Awhile back in the Californian Mercury News opinion section there was a comment by Clare Meyerson suggesting we tax fast foods to cover health care expenses. After all it was recommended that the government tax cigarettes because they cause health problems.  Why not tax fast foods too? There is absolutely no doubt they are contributing to higher obesity rates and a slew of health related problems. She even went as far to suggest

taxing all the unhealthy foods in the grocery store, dubbing it a "Twinkie Tax!" (And who would be responsible for what is healthy or unhealthy?)

These issues come up over and over. Unhealthy habits contribute to poor health but when do we start taking responsibility for our own health?  What is the solution to our health problems and soaring health care coverage costs? How do the poorer populations educate themselves and buy healthier foods? Readers please share your opinions with us.
