Fat Burner of the Week: Diagonal Chops

Dsc00460  Interested in a new way of building a rock hard stomach while standing up?

If you want to feel your abs and obliques firing while being challenged like never before, you have to try this new exercise. You'll be intensely working a large amount of muscle fiber and will definitely be burning calories while improving your Dsc00461midsection. The easiest way to think of this movement is to compare it to chopping wood.

Let's take a look at how it works.

How to Complete:
1. Place your left hand above your right hand on the dumbbell handle
2. Hold the dumbbell above your left shoulder
3. Chop down across your body towards you right knee
4. Resist rotation and stop the dumbbell in front of your right knee
5. Repeat 12x and then switch sides

Tips to Remember:
1. Keep your head up
2. Do not twist your lower back
3. Keep your knees open and over your feet
4. Do not let your legs or knees buckle in
5. Maintain a slight bend in your elbows throughout the exercise
6. Make sure to not round your back at any time

It's a great exercise and a nice change from having to lie on the floor and complete multiple sets of crunches. Give it a try and let me know how it works out for you!

Thank you for the wood chop exercise
I've been looking for a more intense standing abdominal workout . I'm incorporating it into my routine.

Clearly this is a great core exercise that also involves shoulders and back. I have bad knees and cannot do any kind of weight bearing work on them but this exercise goes well with my upper body, four day a week weight program. Also, kayak kid I saw immediately that this is a good off season exercise for paddlers.

I had been fighting weight loss issues all my life and had tried just about everything out there. Then I found a plan that really worked for me. I don’t know if it is what you’re looking for but it is a fat burning and weight loss dream come true for me. I published a blog to tell my story and suggest it to everyone. I know how tough it is to try to drop the pounds and I just wanted to help as many people as I can. You can view my story and this plan at:

Good Luck to all and don’t give up!

Kayakkid, excellent tip!

By taking 5 minutes to stretch or complete a few exercises during work you will help to clear your mind and relieve some stress. It's a great way to increase productivity and get in some physical activity at the same time.

Thanks, I'll be trying this tonight.

Great Exercise, I keep an 8 lb weight at work and it's a great way to sneak in a little exercise and take a breather at the same time!

Hi Shannon,

#2 should read "Hold the dumbbell above your left shoulder."

Just remember to chop the dumbbell from over your shoulder to the opposite knee and you will be using the correct motion.

Thanks for the comment-

I think I'm confused. The picture shows the "chopping" action going from over the right shoulder to the left knee, but the text says the movement should be from over the right shoulder to over the right knee. Which one is it?
