What's a healthy weight?

"In the the long run, we hit only what we aim at."    Thoreau

As you get started on a weight loss program, having a goal will allow you to measure--and celebrate--your progress.

The Daily Needs Calculator can help you determine what a healthy weight is for you. Simply enter your age, current weight, height, and activity level (as shown below) and click "Calculate."

Dnc_2

The calculator will then display your current BMI (body mass index) as well as a range that corresponds to a healthy weight for someone your age, gender, and size. (See example below.)

Bmi_healthy_weight_5

If you are small boned, your healthy weight will probably be toward the lower end of the range. If you have a large frame, it might be toward the higher end.  Note: A healthy weight for those who are very muscular (such as competitive athletes or body-builders) may be above the indicated range.

If you have more than twenty pounds to lose

If you have quite a bit of weight to lose, consider setting an interim goal that feels less overwhelming. For example, you might start by resolving to lose ten percent of your weight.

No matter how overweight you may be, losing just 5 to 10% of your body weight can dramatically reduce the health problems associated with being overweight.  And this initial success can motivate you to set the next goal...and the next.

Next Step:  Go to to the Daily Needs Calculator

Hi I am a 48yr old woman who is 4'10" at about 121. My job is partially sedentary. I am trying to lose the 12 lbs I put back on in the past 3 months. Does it matter the combination and types of food help in boosting your metabolism and burning the fat? I am pretty active, but have found as I have gotten older a little harder to lose and I feel tired alot as well. So what can I do not too feel this way and get back into the swing of things and lose this weight again and keep it off for good?

Hi there
i have a question.
im in bodybuilding for 5 years now, im 21, eyery year i have a cutting phase where i reduce my bf to about 7-8 %, so i take care of my carbs fat and proteine intake, so i eat foods who have low GI . im now 77 kg and my heigt is 178cm (5' 10''#, to reduce my bf to 7-8 % every year so far i had to go under 70 kg # this summer i had 69, and summer before i hade 72 , but this summer i had gone under 7 % of bf,which had the concequence of lossing some extra weight then the summer before#

So this is the thing , i cycle every day from 50 to 200 carbs intake for whole day:# one day 50, second day 100, third 150, and 200 on the 4-th day # . after 4 days i repeat the cycle. the proteine intake is 3 grams per kg #i have to take more , caz i dont want to go in catabolizam, which would result in my muscle lost, and i dont want that#. The fats on this preticular diet i don't take, caz i think i get enaugh of them from meat i eat #chicken, turkey , and tuna and othe fishes#

Now i had to explain whole this to ask u the next question,i know there is a very little food's that we know the GI of them, i have came across this GL #glicemic load# on this site. I know about some foods and their GI #glicemic index#, but i see theat u have developed an mathematical formula to estimet the raises in blood shugar . And u call that glicemil load, and i get that, it' is very helpfull to me. BUT I WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS THE RECOMENDED GL FOR THE WHOLE DAY , for me on this kind of diet? what is the amout that i should not excide ? caz i want to keep my blood shugars low, caz i don't want to get express rises of Blood shugar , caz that meanes more insulin, and that extra shugar goes in body fat .. and i dont want that. One more question. what is considerd low GL #under 10?# ? and what is consinderd high GL#above 20?#?#NOTE: i will tell u that i take measurments for 100g # .

If u can answer this i would be verry greatfull

regards

Ante

Nick, you can't use BMI to know your ideal weight if you are a bodybuilder. If there is a clinic in your area that does bioimpedance analysis, I recommend that you try that. It's fast, easy and as accurate as anything else. To learn more, read the following:

I am 51 y/o male. My weights variues from 154 to 156. I am training for another marathon and would like to drop to below 150. I know that with each pound lost I can run faster. What is the best way to do this. I recently became a vegan but realize I now need to refine my food choices even more and stay away from processed foods even though they are vegan. Thanks!

I am almost 15, im 6'1" and I weight 156, is that under weight? I bodybuild but I am still a bit confused about weight

I am 5'3'' and 140lb and want to lose 10 more lbs but slow and steady is the key for me. I use fit4lyfe and read as much as I can and really cviw it as a lifestyle. I highly recommend it. www.fit4lyfe.webs.com

Certified dieticians recommend efficient weight loss diet plan. Plans are helpful in improving the personality of the overweight patients by eliminating extra fat. Trimbia diet pills, Hoodia Gordonii are the effective drugs for balancing the weight.

If you want to know how to calculate your BMI, check out the following article: http://weightloss.suite101.com/article.cfm/how_to_find_your_ideal_weight

Dylan: the BMI is not meaningful for people who are muscular (or pregnant women). You could try other techniques like bioimpedance to measure fat directly: http://weight-loss-motivators.suite101.com/article.cfm/bioelectrical_impedance_analysis

Sam and Amanda: Just because your number is in the "healthy" range doesn't mean that you are healthy. It depends on other factors. Is your weight stable? Do you have energy or are you tired all the time? How's your blood work. In 2005 my weight was in the "ideal" range, but nothing else was ideal! Use the BMI as a guideline, but listen to your body.

Kristian, are you a vegetarian for ethical reasons or because you think it's healthy? I lost 30 lbs in 3 months without being hungry by eating less carbohydrate. I also dramatically improved my energy, my immune system, my blood work, etc. I lost so much weight off my belly that my friends were amazed! To find out what not to eat, go to: http://proteins-carb-fats.suite101.com/article.cfm/what_not_to_eat

Eating carbs actually MAKES YOU HUNGRY! To find out how to suppress you appetite with food, not drugs, check out http://weight-loss-motivators.suite101.com/article.cfm/the_right_way_to_lose_weight

Hi,
I am 5'11 and about 190 pounds.
I actually have lost about 12 pounds over last 4~5 months. However i need to lose more of belly fat. During workouts I lift weight for 40 mins and run at avg speed of 5 mph. My daily meal plan focuses on protien. Is it not a good way to consume protein in order to lose belly fat?

Hi,

I am 5'11 160 lbs, how else can I lose weight? I am a boxer, I run 3 miles daily, lift and I am vegetarian yet I can't get below 160 lbs. Although I have done it via fat burners, I know it's bad for me. What else do you suggest?

Posted by: ray | Jan 5, 2009 9:40:15 PM

i just wanted to thank everyone and say...hi viridiana...

Dylan-

I'm confused? Are you saying you think you have more muscle than average or more fat?? I read both.

If you have more muscle than average, being over the BMI by 2 pounds is perfectly fine. It's not always accurate for EVERYONE.

My fiance is actually typically over the BMI...in the "overweight" category, but if you were to see him you'd NEVER know it. He's absolutely one of the healthiest people I know. He exercises daily and eats VERY well. He just has more muscle, which makes him heavier.

BMI doesn't take into account body consistency, only height and weight.

Posted by: Amanda | Dec 24, 2008 12:21:20 PM

Sam-
Your weight right now is good. Your BMI is 23.8, which is within the good healthy range. If you're BMI were to be 25 or more, that is when you'd be considered overweight and may consider trying to lose some weight. As of right now just eat good foods, avoid the junk, and get daily exercise...you should be just fine! :)

I am 5'2" and I weigh about 130 pounds. How much weight should I lose to be a good weight?

Posted by: Dylan | Aug 15, 2008 11:31:41 PM

So I'm a 28 y/o male at 5'11" and 180 lbs. I figure I should be at the upper end of "healthy weight." I'm not, I'm above it by 2 pounds.

The calculator says if my body fat is less than average I'm still OK. Well what happens if I don't think my body fat is less than average? I think I'm more musclar than average, but my body fat is at the upper end of average. So am I still a fatso?
