Be Lean, live like an Okinawan - Part 1

J0399974 Okinawa is an island in Japan known to have the healthiest population of centenarians on earth. What keeps them so healthy and at a normal weight? Today I will cover just a few aspects of the Okinawan eating habits. While waiting for a dentist appointment a few weeks ago I read this article on them, so I don't have the original source available. Fortunately I remembered some of the highlights because it's what I encourage my clients to do.

Okinawans stay thin throughout their lifetimes by eating fewer calories because they are consuming nutrient dense whole foods like fruits, vegetables, grains and lean protein sources. They also eat according to the seasons which provides them with more variety and nutrients from their food.

This culture makes meals more meaningful by sitting down and enjoying those times with family and friends regularly. The food itself is not a source of emotional gratification. Instead they actively nurture a sense of social community and spirituality in their day to day life, giving it more purpose, meaning, and connection. I believe not having these ties to community or family could be contributing to emotional eating.

We could definitely learn a few things from the Okinawan population despite the business of our lives. Tomorrow I’ll cover a few more points about this culture that we could definitely adopt.
