A Healthy Salad - NOT!

J0414039 Recently a client of mine showed me his food diary. He was so proud of himself for ordering what he thought was a healthy salad in a Mexican fast food restaurant.

I tactfully informed him that the fried taco shell of his salad was exceeding his daily allowance in fats. According to the Diabetic Exchanges, his entire salad had about 10 servings of fat!  He just didn’t realize that the taco shell of the salad was loaded with fat even though the ingredients in the salad weren’t too bad. He could have cut his calorie and fat intake dramatically just by not eating the shell.

Just because something is labeled as a salad, don’t assume that the ingredients are healthy and fat free! I suggest checking ND’s Nutrient Search Tool prior to going out so you can make the best possible choices.
