Seasonal Eating and Cravings
Earlier in the week someone mentioned craving foods high in carbohydrates and fats after working outside in the cold, wet wind all day. It’s natural to want something to “warm” you up. Today’s blog will address cravings from the perspective of eating according to the seasons.
Chinese dietary tradition suggests eating foods that harmonize with the season. All foods have a warming or cooling ability. Foods that offer warming and strengthening abilities should be considered when the weather is cooler. These include cooked whole grains (oatmeal, barley, etc.), cooked squashes, root vegetables (beets, carrots, potatoes, etc.) nuts, seeds, lean meat (particularly lamb and chicken), soups, beans/legumes, and spices like ginger, cinnamon and curry.
If you are craving a lot of carbohydrates and fats at dinner examine how you eat during the day. Make sure you are eating foods that supply you with both energy and warmth. (Check ND’s pantry to see if you are eating enough balanced calories throughout the day. If you are not eating enough or not eating food in a balanced way, that may also cause carbohydrate cravings.)
