Out of Sight is Out of Mouth
The holidays are approaching and that usually means more candy items sitting on office desks. Cornell University performed an interesting study that proved out of sight is out of mouth, something I’ve personally touted for years. The study found "that women eat twice as many Hershey kisses when they are in clear containers on their desks than when they are in opaque containers but eat even fewer candies when they are six feet away."
More intriguing was the fact
"that the 40 secretaries in the study underestimated their intake of the
candy placed on their desks, and yet overestimated how much they ate
when the candy was further away."
If you are serious about managing your weight don’t put tempting candy on your desk in the first place. When another employee has candy on his/her desk you might tactfully request that it be placed in another location. Could a less tempting sweet be purchased? You might even ask your co-worker for support with your weight loss efforts. I suggest putting fresh fruit at your work station instead of being tempted by sweets. If you honestly feel you might be deprived by not indulging once in awhile, factor candy into your day’s total calories using ND's Nutrient Search Tool.
